A Head Start for Assistant Principals: My Start-of-Year Checklist

The beginning of the school year can feel like a whirlwind, especially for assistant principals who are balancing everything from discipline to duty schedules to supporting teachers. When I served as an AP, having a clear roadmap helped me stay focused, build trust with my team, and ensure a smooth launch for students and staff.

I created this Assistant Principal Start-of-Year Checklist to help bring order to the chaos. This list includes many of the responsibilities I prioritized before the first bell rang and continued monitoring through the first month of school.

Whether you are new to the role or just looking for a more efficient system, feel free to use this checklist as a guide. Every school and leadership style is different, so please adjust it to fit your building’s needs.

What’s Inside the Checklist:

Before Staff Returns – from reviewing student handbooks to prepping radios and crisis tools

✅ Staff Return Week – supporting new teachers, reviewing school procedures, and setting the tone

✅ First Week of School – being visible, managing logistics, and starting student relationship-building

✅ First 30 Days – launching walkthroughs, student assemblies, and behavior supports

Ongoing Habits – keeping a rhythm for communication, morale, and reflection

🎯 Pro tip: One of my daily goals was to visit all the classrooms in my grade-level assignments—even if just to peek in. Some days, I didn’t make it to every room, but the intention helped keep me grounded in instructional leadership and visible support.
