School Leaders: Your Weekend Permission Slip

As a former school administrator, I know firsthand the relentless pace of school leadership. The emails never stop, the to-do list seems endless, and there is always one more thing that needs your attention. But as we wrap up another demanding week, I want to offer you something: a permission slip for the weekend.

Dear Principals and Assistant Principals,

You are hereby granted permission to:

  1. Step away from your inbox

  2. Ignore work-related messages

  3. Spend quality time with your family

  4. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation

  5. Recharge your batteries for the week ahead

You might be thinking, "But I have so much to do!" Trust me, I understand. However, those emails to teachers and staff can wait until Monday. The work will still be there, but this time with your loved ones is irreplaceable.

Remember, finding balance is not just good for you—it sets a powerful example for your entire school community. When you prioritize your well-being, you are modeling healthy behaviors for your staff and students. You are showing them that taking time for oneself and family is okay, even necessary.

So, this weekend, I challenge you to truly unplug. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Have a tech-free family game night

  • Take a nature walk or hike

  • Read that book you have been meaning to get to

  • Try a new recipe or restaurant with your loved ones

  • Engage in a hobby you enjoy but rarely have time for

Remember, a balanced leader is a better leader. Your school needs you at your best, which means allowing yourself time to rest and rejuvenate. As you head into this weekend, take a deep breath and remind yourself: The emails can wait. Your family and your well-being come first.

How will you unwind this weekend? Share your plans in the comments below—it might just inspire a fellow educator to prioritize their well-being, too!
