Should I stay or Should I go? First Year Principal frustrations!

Dr. White,

This is my first year; I came to the job after teaching for 6 years at the same school where I have my admin position. I had asked for an instructional coach/ interventionist position but was given the admin position. Tomorrow I have a meeting with my supervisor, where I am thinking of announcing my resignation. It’s been a tough year, with many difficulties getting teachers and my bosses on board with new initiatives. I also miss working with students and doing intervention which is an area that I am really passionate about. Still, as the date gets close, I have second thoughts. Should I leave and look for a position that allows me to keep growing in my interests, or should I stick with my current position for at least one more year?

Dr. White's answer:

You have to do what is best for you! The first year is always challenging, but things can improve over time. There is nothing wrong with searching for another opportunity while still in your role. Just make sure you are not making decisions based on emotions. It sometimes takes time to build up trust and buy-in from others. Connect with a good mentor/peers. I am confident you can create the environment you desire. Also, when asking for positions, sometimes for budget reasons above “our” pay grades, it does not work out initially. I have been in situations where my ask became a reality a year later. In the interim, I learned to get creative with the staff and volunteers I had available already. No, for me just means .. not right now, but let me find another way!

What prevents you from still working with students directly now? You were appointed to the principal position for a reason! You can do it. But if you think and pray about it and another door more aligned with your goals opens for you, go for it. Just remember to try to make an objective decision, so you have no regrets later. Always do what is best for you, no matter what!

Best wishes,

Dr. White
