Teacher/Educator Burnout

by: Dr. Korrie L. White January 31, 2024

Question:

Dr. White,

I am a third-year teacher and wonder if anyone else is dealing with teacher burnout.  I am struggling!  I got a new student yesterday and a new student Tuesday.  I am counting the next 76 days left of school.  How can I address this feeling?

You are not alone!  Let me start by saying. …. Breathe! Here are a couple of tips I share with teachers and administrators to address burnout.

  1. Designate specific times for planning, grading, and personal activities, ensuring a balance.  For example, I schedule the time that I will exercise, take my dogs for walks, cook, etc.  Treat your personal time just as you would a job (actually treat your time better)- smile.  Do not allow anything to interrupt your time for what you need to do personally.

  1. Delegate tasks that can be shared among colleagues or even students. This can lighten your workload and create a sense of shared responsibility within the school community, even if you have one other person on your team.  Collaborate and determine how you both can work smarter instead of harder.  As my dear uncle Stan (a retired educator) often shares, “It will work if you work it!”

  1. Foster a support network by connecting with fellow educators. Share resources, discuss challenges, and seek advice. Collaborating with others can provide fresh perspectives and a sense of solidarity during challenging times.  Remember, I am not talking about getting together for a gripe session. You need to get with a group of people who will pray with you, encourage you, listen to you, and offer solutions.

During my tenure as a K-12 teacher, I discovered that the second semester often presented unique challenges. This period followed a well-deserved holiday break, bringing about inevitable changes. I want you to remember that you're not alone in facing these challenges. Hang in there. It is crucial to prioritize your well-being, so don't hesitate to take your personal, vacation, or sick days as needed – after all, you've earned them for a reason. Taking a mental health day is not only acceptable but sometimes essential for a good reset.
